Advanced Drawing Program

Technique
over
intuition

Drawing at an advanced level means understanding why a line reads as convincing — not just drawing it repeatedly until it feels right. Lodskam's program addresses that gap with structured, technique-driven instruction across four focused modules.

What the program covers

Four modules run consecutively over eight weeks. Each module targets a distinct technical area — from observational accuracy to expressive mark-making — and builds on the previous one without repeating ground already covered.

Assignments are practical and submitted between sessions, so feedback is specific to your work rather than generic.

01

Observational Accuracy

Measuring proportions without a grid, training the eye to detect angle errors, and translating three-dimensional form onto a flat surface using ellipses and foreshortening.

02

Tonal Construction

Building structured value ranges from a single light source. Covers cast shadows, form shadows, occlusion zones, and how paper tone affects perceived contrast in charcoal work.

03

Mark Quality and Texture

Controlling line weight intentionally — hatching direction, pressure gradients with 2H–6B grades, and using eraser as a drawing tool rather than a correction device.

04

Compositional Decisions

Placing subject within picture plane — negative space as active element, cropping choices, and using contrast to direct attention without relying on color cues.

05

Complex Subjects

Applying accumulated technique to still life, architectural detail, and figure drawing. Emphasis on consistent light logic across a full composition rather than isolated studies.

06

Critique and Iteration

Portfolio review session at the end of each module. Instructor annotates submitted drawings directly, identifying specific technical issues and assigning targeted correction exercises.

Where participants typically start — and where the program takes them

Starting point

Drawing by feel

Most participants arrive drawing from memory or approximation — proportions are off in predictable ways, tonal range is narrow, and shadows are placed by guess rather than light logic. The work looks reasonable at a glance but breaks under closer examination.

After the program

Drawing with reasoning

Participants leave with a clear vocabulary for analysing their own work — they can identify why a drawing is unconvincing and apply a specific fix rather than redrawing from scratch. Progress continues after the program because the diagnostic skill transfers to independent practice.

Drawing tools and reference materials arranged on a studio desk
What drawing tools are covered in the program?
The program covers dry media including graphite pencils from H2 to 8B, charcoal sticks and compressed charcoal, and ink with technical pens. Digital drawing on tablet is introduced in the final module as a supplementary technique alongside traditional tools.
Is prior drawing experience required to enroll?
Participants are expected to have basic drawing familiarity — the ability to sketch simple shapes and lines with some confidence. The program begins at an intermediate level and does not cover foundational mark-making from scratch.
How are the live sessions structured?
Each live session runs for 90 minutes and combines a short technique demonstration followed by a guided drawing exercise. Instructor feedback is given on submitted work between sessions, typically within 48 hours.
Can I access recordings after a live session?
Yes. All live sessions are recorded and available to enrolled participants for the duration of the program. Recordings include the full demonstration and any Q&A segments at the end of each class.
What cohort size limits are in place?
Cohorts are capped at 12 participants. This keeps feedback specific and ensures the instructor can annotate submitted drawings individually rather than providing generalized group critiques.
